“Save the sea”- A beach Cleaning by Thistle Port Dickson Resort

We love our beach days so much, chilling with the children and family and soaking up the sun……. The best ever! And if we want to keep it up, we must keep the beach clean.

Did you know that by this year (2018) over 5.28 trillion pieces of plastic are in our oceans? Over 269, 000 tons of debris roam the surface and kill more than 200,000 members of the marine life a year……and the number is rising! The best way to stop this is to prevent more trash from going into our beautiful oceans!

Last Saturday, 10 March 2018, Thistle Port Dickson Resort with collaboration with the Children from New Life Care Centre, Port Dickson, SWM Environment Sdn Bhd together with the employees of Thistle Port Dickson Resort and I also brought along my students representing Pusat Tuisyen Intelegensia Elit Seremban for the “Save the Sea”- A beach Cleaning Event which the objective of emphasising the importance of a cleaner shoreline and litter free ocean.

We were warmly welcomed by the Public Relations Manager, Ms Irene Wong and was ushered to Cumulus. It was a lovely morning, birds chirping, the sea breeze gently blowing, the sound of the ocean and waves hitting the shorelines….I even spotted a rainbow!

We were led by the Recreational Team for the morning exercise. The children were excited, all were rocking and dancing the zumba. Even the General Manager, Mr Eusebius Samm and his Head of Departments joined in the fun filled Zumba work out! Everyone was pumped up with smiling and with sweaty faces but excitement filled the air.

In coalition with SWM Environment Sdn Bhd, The Public Relations Officer, Cik Mariam gave a short briefing about Recycling. The talk in educating the young and also old alike that littering has to stop and to inculcate the need to separate waste amd recycle them for a clean, safe and healthy environment to be enjoyed by all living creatures and beings. She also emphasised on the importance of the 3R- Reuse, Reduce and Recycle.

The children were divided into five teams together with the employees of Thistle Port Dickson Resort. Each team were given cleaning equipments such as gloves, garbage bags, rakes etc. They were given an hour to clean up the beach and the winners were indentified with the heaviest garbage collected.

They marched along the 1km stretch of the beach to rake up dried leaves while collecting discarded plastic bottles, polystyrene containers and driftwood. All the litter they collected filled up about 10 large bags weighing 263.5 kg of rubbish.

Prizes, hampers and a little red packet surprise (ang pow) were given to the winners and the participants from Thistle Port Dickson Resort. In an ongoing effort with related organisations and authorities, Thistle Port Dickson Resort is committed to continually maintain the cleanliness of its shorelines. We made the ocean smile today……

Encourage everyone! We’re pretty sure almost everyone has a place in their heart for the beach, so pass on the word, help keep the beach clean, our marine life safe and the beach beautiful!
